Dollar car rental company operates in 640 worldwide locations in 53 countries, including 350 in the United States and Canada.
The company is in fact part of Dollar Thrifty corporation that is traded in the NYSE (under ticker DTG).
As of 2006, the Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group, Inc. had a fleet of 185,317 cars in the U.S. and Canada.
Although both the Dollar and Thrifty brands are often associated with cheap car rentals, they have also been focusing on the higher end of the car rental market.
To do this, in April 2007, Dollar launched something called StyleSeries service at six U.S. airport locations, including Ft. Lauderdale, Orland, Miami, Las Vegas, Los Angeles and San Francisco.
Available cars under the StyleSeries service include cars such as Mercedes, Hummer H2, Chevrolet Corvette, Cadillac Escalade, BMW and Jaguar.
As for the history of the company, Dollar Rent A Car was founded in 1965 in Los Angeles, California.
In August 1990, Dollar was acquired by Chrysler, and this historical connection is still part of the why the company carries a lot of Chrysler cars in its fleet.
In November 1997, Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group, successor by merger, filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission to offer its shares to the public.
Following this sale of the company to the market, Chrysler no longer owned any of the common stock of the company.
One of the Dollar Rent A Car company's strengths is that it has more then 260 suburban and on-airport rental car locations at all major airports throughout the United States.
All in all, Dollar has more than 400 car rental locations in 26 countries.
